Mike Hansen's Bio
I'm a first generation Canadian and a 'blue collar' politician. I was born in Canmore,
Alberta on December the 1st, 1954 to immigrant parents. Our family moved to Hawaii
in 1958 and back to Canada in 1963. Since then I've lived in Roberts Creek, North
Vancouver, Parksville, Coombs, Nanaimo, California, Washington State, Tsawwassen
and now Vancouver.
I've lived in Vancouver for 9 years, 8 of those at my present home. Here's a little info
about my Vancouver political career. I ran as an independent for MLA in Vancouver
2004 and as an independent for mayor in 2005 and 2008, when I cut my long hair
and gave it to 'Kid's With Cancer'. Cutting the “hair-farm” again 2014. I lived in the
DTES for 9 month (04/05) at the Hildon Hotel and start my education on what was
going wrong in this neighbourhood. I would walk around day and night, absorbing the
sights and sounds of an ignored part of society. I kept thinking, why has Our city,
provincial, federal governments and the police allowed this to go on for so long?
What's the 'vested interest' in keeping Citizens in a debilitating drug induced coma?
That's one of the reasons I'm running for mayor again. Some thing is seriously wrong!
My political mentor is, Chuck Cadman! I moved back to Canada from the U.S. in
December of 1999 to get politically active, as I saw My country being absorbed by
similar drug gangs and political corruption. I knew of the issues in Vancouver as I
lived just across the border, commuting to Vancouver to work or visit daily. After
moving back to Canada I ran for MLA of Delta South in 2001 with the 'Marijuana
Party' and as an independent for mayor of Delta in 2002, while living as a guest on The Tsawwassen First Nations Reserve. I moved from there to Vancouver in 2004.
I have 3 sons, the oldest is 33 and the twins are 25. I've been in construction most of
my life with episodes of long haul trucking, brokering pension funds, promoting stocks
and consulting.
I call myself a “try-athlete” (tried most sports). I exercise 40 minutes, 4 times a week
with 25 minutes on a 'speed bag' and ride my bike 40-50 k per week. I'm a Cannabis
educator (not associated with 'marijuana/420' activism) and use Cannabis as recovery
for my crack disease and clean for 19 years. When in a relationship I'm a 'one women
man' but when I'm single you might find me in the company of a 'Lady of the evening',
day or night. Don't be alarmed, as I'm a proponent! I'm a “proud, happy and gay
heterosexual”.
I've been arrested, jailed twice and charged once for protesting the n.a.t.o. assault on
Afghanistan and very proud of it.
I've been poor, homeless, alcoholic, drug addicted and in despair. When you manage
to overcome life’s obstacles, your life can and will change. I have a better education
than most on the DTES issues because I've 'been there, done that'. “From the highs to
lows and back again”. Life has been very good to me and I hope the best for all of you.
